Liz Weston: Retiring? If you need a home loan, get one first Retired engineers Kelly and Derek Barkey assumed they would be approved when they applied for a $50,000 home equity line of credit two years ago to fix up their new house. The Barkeys, now 56 and 59, had just sold their longtime home in Southern California and paid cash for a house worth about $850,000 near St. Louis, Missouri. They had retirement accounts worth $3 million, $500,000 in a taxable brokerage account and excellent credit scores. They were surprised when a national bank turned them down. They tried a local credit union, which also rejected them.“We haven’t been turned down for credit since about 1987,” says Kelly Barkey, remembering when the couple applied for a rewards credit card while she was still a college student.HOME LOANS CAN BE HARDER TO GET IN RETIREMENTThe federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibits lenders from discriminating against applicants based on age, but that doesn’t mean getting a home loan in retirement will be easy even for those with good credit,...

DeSantis says state lawmakers will ‘formally nullify’ Disney’s attempt to thwart state takeover  (CNN) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Monday that the Republican-controlled state legislature will take steps to “formally nullify” Disney’s attempts to thwart a state takeover of its special governing powers. In his latest act of retaliation against Disney, DeSantis said lawmakers will advance a bill that will “make sure that people understand that you don’t get to put your own company over the will of the people of Florida.”DeSantis moved earlier this year to take over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the special taxing district that for half a century gave Disney control over the land around its Central Florida theme parks, and install his political allies on the district’s board of supervisors. However, Disney in February reached an agreement wit the outgoing board that seemed to render the body powerless to control the entertainment giant. The DeSantis administration was unaware of the agreement for a month and vowed retribu...

Olaf Scholz’s wife resigns as state minister POTSDAM — Britta Ernst, the wife of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is stepping down as education minister of the east German state of Brandenburg, the state chancellery announced Monday. Ernst, also a member of Scholz’s center-left Social Democratic Party, had held the mandate since 2017. Her plans to combat the shortage of teachers in the state “had unfortunately not found the support of the SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament,” Ernst explained in her resignation statement. In recent weeks, there had been tensions between the minister and her own parliamentary group. She wanted to cut 200 vacant teaching positions and staff them with social workers instead. Ernst also planned to reduce funds for additional school social services. SPD colleague and lawmaker Katja Poschmann openly criticized Ernst and her plans at the end of March, saying that every teaching position and school service was “indispensable.”The state premier, the SPD’s Die...

Reliever Mark Leiter Jr. — armed with a nasty splitter — is putting on a ‘Leit Show’ for the Chicago Cubs Mark Leiter Jr.’s journey certainly took a winding path to the mound Sunday at Dodger Stadium.Leiter’s evolution from a 22nd-round pick who made 11 starts his rookie year on a 96-loss rebuilding Philadelphia Phillies team to a high-leverage reliever for a Chicago Cubs team eying a postseason appearance — with Tommy John surgery and a pandemic-prolonged rehab process in between — is a testament to the right-hander’s perseverance and adaptability.Leiter hasn’t allowed a run through seven appearances, looking dominant in the process. Entering Monday’s series in Oakland, Leiter has’s struck out 12 of the 26 batters he’s faced this season. His splitter is a nightmare pitch for left-handed hitters, who are 2-for-18 against him, and nine of the lefty’s 10 strikeouts are from it.Leiter again shined in a big spot during Sunday’s 3-2 win. He entered the seventh inning with runners on first and second base as the Cubs held onto ...
